Adaptability

Adaptability

stuck on high alert, list of small things, emergency osteo only

Just a quick letter this month - my capacity is lower than usual and yours might be too.

I'm learning so much about my nervous system health this month. My body has been signalling me with panic responses (dizziness, heart palpitations, intense headaches, easily startled). Even when my mind seems calm, my body is stuck on high alert. And although everything is medically normal, it still feels intense!

This page is a useful resource for understanding nervous system dysregulation and what to do about it.

I'm finding new ways to release this sympathetic stress or hyperarousal. My usual stress response is freeze or hypoarousal so I'm familiar with supporting myself out of foggy fatigue and numbness. But releasing this buzzing panicky energy is a new skill.

So far I've found colourful puzzles, dancing, playful games that move my body, and things that make me belly laugh are helpful without being overly stimulating.

I'm also hanging onto simple daily and weekly routines that keep me regulated and adaptable. Noticing and celebrating the small things, even if I have to write a list or take photos to remind myself at the end of the day:

  • rode our bikes to the park
  • found a tiny rainbow feather
  • my daughter giggled and said it was a fun day today mum!
  • called a friend to check in
  • listened to an emotionally supportive podcast

It's a very different list of expectations for myself than usual. And that is ok and just as valuable.

Reminder that routine osteopathy treatments are restricted at the moment to encourage us all to stay home. However if you are experiencing severe pain or physical limitation or are pregnant or postpartum, I have emergency appointments available for you.

Much love,

Emily
