Three positive things
what is already going right? help if nothing feels positive
I was given a wise piece of advice this month.
My GP noticed that I tend to spend a lot of time worrying about the future; my mind racing with plans to improve any situation. She suggested I take a moment to notice three positive things each day. Three things that are already going right, that bring me a sense of satisfaction.
I've found this practice really helpful. It keeps me grounded and positive in a way that doesn't exclude the challenges and strong emotions. It has supported me through the tough news from around the world this week.
So, to share this practice with you, here are three positive things that happened in the last month (among many other tedious, tricky, sad and infuriating things)...
1. My daughter started at our local school and loves it
She has felt a lot of separation anxiety around school. And multiple lockdowns over the past two years meant she stayed home more than half the time, so never really had a chance to settle in.
It is a big shift for us to just walk up the hill and say goodbye easily everyday. And it is a joy to see her confidence and resilience in action.
2. Papa (my mum's dad) died peacefully in his sleep a few weeks ago
He lived a long happy life (he was 91 years old), filled with many adventures and close relationships with family and friends.
My whole family was able to gather together in Sydney to send him off with a celebration of his life. I spoke at his funeral, reflecting on his gentle strength and the support he gave me throughout my life.

3. The studio in my backyard is a reality
After many months of waiting, there is a solid structure in the back yard. And we have finally been able to clear the front yard of building materials too. My dream of working from home, in a peaceful self designed space is almost true...
The next few weeks we'll be coordinating concrete polishing, plumbing, electrical installation, plastering, painting, cabinetry, drapery, landscaping... all the fun jobs.
Stay tuned for an opening date soon.

If you have a moment to notice three positive things in your life I'd love to hear them. And it's ok if you can't think of anything positive right now, you are not alone.
I find these tips for keeping it together when the world feels like it is falling apart comforting and practical. And Beyond Blue 1300 224 636 is a good place to start if you need to reach out for more help.
Much love,
Emily
