Meaning, medicine and magic

Meaning, medicine and magic

new name and space for my words, second podcast conversation, eclipse season

You might notice a slight shift in the style of my letters this month. I have expanded into a new space on Substack, and given them a new name - Fluid Thinking. If you would like to listen to me read the letter aloud, I will be adding audio here too.

I’ve been writing and sending newsletters for almost three years to a list of friends, family and clients (if that includes you, thank you! I love you). This regular practice of writing has allowed me to find a voice for all the thoughts and ideas that swirl in me. To connect deeply with more people than I thought possible. To be more honest and vulnerably human than ever. And to let myself be seen and heard.

Now, I want to explore the possibility of sharing with people beyond my tangible circle; weaving reciprocal ideas and inspiration with other quiet voices and sensitive thinkers. And I appreciate that I can have a more direct relationship with my readers here. You are always invited to reply to my emails, and now you can join me in the comments to discuss and generate ideas together.

I’m also excited to keep my writing accessible and archived in a way that emails can’t. So something from years ago can be looked up, and thoughts can be followed deeper and further. It’s like keeping my past, present and emerging selves all in one place.

I know how valuable the words and thoughts of others can be. They bring meaning, medicine and magic to my life daily. They keep my curiousity and imagination alive, break my heart open and remind me what it is to be human. I’m so grateful to all the writers that have been willing to share their words with me in various forms.

I hope my words here will be a drop in the ocean of your imagination. A spark to your creative fire. A breath of fresh air. A soft mossy place to rest your body. And a pause in your busy life to feel the spaces within, between and around you.

Thank you for choosing to be here and support my work. I hope you feel at home. And as always, if you no longer want to read my letters, you can unsubscribe at anytime.

In other news, I recorded a second conversation with Narelle from Saltwater Songlines this month. She has called the episode Body-Land, Space and Mud. (Our previous conversation from December 2022 is called Our Fluid Field - Embryology & Beyond).

I really love the places Narelle guides us, and I encourage you to listen to more episodes if you are interested. I especially enjoyed the interviews with Samantha Clark and Easkey Britton. You can find all episodes via her website or wherever you listen to podcasts.

A milestone moment of parenting: lying on the couch reading simultaneously, Apr 2023

There is a solar eclipse this week, followed closely by a lunar eclipse on 5-6 May. During an eclipse season it is particularly important to take care of your body. Consider prioritising sleep and rest, moving your body daily to shift energy, and settling your nervous system with more easeful activities and less screen time.

I will be focusing on clear boundaries around digital communication - taking my time to respond to emails, DMs, texts and phone calls, showing my care by responding thoughtfully rather than promptly. And letting others know they can take their time when I send something too, “no rush to reply / please respond in your own time / answer at your convenience”. Lets normalise valuing our own and other’s attention.

Much love,

Emily
